First of all, allow me to welcome you and thank you for taking your time in visiting my blog. It means a lot to me.
This is suppose to be my About Me page, but I have decided to make it as my very first post. Again, a big welcome to betterthanboys.com.
My name is Ryan and I am a proud Filipino, currently living and working in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I am working here as a customer service agent for an airport ground handling service here in Dubai. My wife’s name is Anne and we have three beautiful children, namely Heinrich, Alexa and the youngest is Jay-jay.
A lot of times, my friends would crack-up a joke about me and ask, “why did you decide to come up with a style blog? You’re not stylish” they would say. Well, yeah I admit that I’m not stylish (as of the time of this writing). I don’t have much, like some fancy or trendy clothes in my wardrobe. In fact, the only pieces I have are a couple of graphic tees, 2 dress shirts, 2 pair of jeans, 1 black dress shoes, 1 cheap boot and 1 K-Swiss sneaker. But I got a suit though, which I believe is very important in a man’s wardrobe.
But I wanna be stylish, I said to myself. I don’t want to be standing in the middle of the crowd and my wife would see me and she would say, “that’s my husband”. No. I want her to see me in the crowd and she would say, “oh yeah that’s my husband!”. That would be something.
I’m not saying that I have to spend a lot of cash for outfits alone, knowing that there are some more important things that I need my hard earned money to spend to. Yes, I need to buy some clothes from time to time. Aside from this being my passion, which is what matters most I suppose, what I am really after is not having a huge wardrobe to boast to other people. What I am after is knowledge and education.
I want to learn and be empowered on how I should present myself in front of others. On how to be confident of my attitude and my own style and myself in general. I want to improve and learn how to take care of my well being. It doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, even if I have tons of clothes in my closet but don’t know how to pull it off… what’s the use? Especially in my line of work as a Customer Service agent, I am always and all the time in the front lines. There is constant interaction with people from different walks of life right at the very start of my shift until the very last minute of those eight hours. So presentation and confidence should be my number one ally.
Back when I still didn’t care how I dress and how I present myself to people, my wife would be genuinely proud to introduce me to her friends, but there is that kind of awkwardness that I feel deep inside that makes me not to enjoy the moment of being with friends and other people. I did not realize then that that feeling was so visible in my wife’s eyes. So I asked her of what should I do? Then she kissed me and said: “I love you and I am proud of you no matter what, but you need to start taking care of your image. You need to start building yourself up to your own standards. It’s not that what other people would say about you or how you look matters. What matters is still you. Yourself. At the end of the day, what’s truly important is when you go to bed and tell yourself that I was awesome today, and still able to say the same thing when you wake up the next morning.”
I may not be educated when it comes to style or men’s fashion. I may lack the necessary skills, experience and knowledge on how to educate other people in this topic. Nah, doesn’t matter, because for me, this blog is a journey. A personal journey not about self discovery, but rather of self improvement and a constant learning process. This is sharing of information and knowledge. I will ask my readers to share their knowledge with me and I will share to them what I have learned in return.
This blog is for everybody. For every man from all walks of life who wants to step up their game. For the fathers, husbands and brothers out there. This is for the baristas of Starbucks and the waiters of Nando’s. For the taxi drivers of Dubai and New York to the call canter agents in the Philippines. For the seasoned fashionistas of Milan down to the traders of Wall Street. So whoever and wherever you are, it would be an honor if you could join me along in this journey. Let us master the art of self betterment and truly learn on how to be a man and the best version of ourselves the best way that we can. Together, let us become what we are destined to be. Not a boy anymore, but a man.
